PAT testing for businesses 

The Electricity at Work Regulations require all portable electrical equipment used in business (and within a landlord’s remit) to be maintained in a safe condition. PAT testing is one standard that helps to meet these compliance requirements. 

Workplace electrical safety is critical, and it is every business’s responsibility to ensure that all electrical equipment is up to code and operating safely. 

Businesses must identify what is important in the workplace and take into careful consideration the installation method of each electrical appliance. 

It is also a requirement that you maintain and keep detailed records and logbooks to show your compliance with the 1989 Electricity at Work Regulations.

It is recommended that businesses take a risk-based approach to determine testing frequency, taking on responsibility for maintenance and regular scheduled checks matched with risk assessments and reporting. 

When we examine portable appliance testing in the UK in more detail, we see that equipment can be classified as Class 1 or Class 2. 

Both of these class systems run from mains voltage, and both have PAT testing requirements. Two levels of protection are recorded, and all appliances in both classes are checked to ensure they meet safety standards.

  • Stationery/IT equipment – annual testing
  • Schools/care homes/hospitals – testing on portable electrical equipment should be carried out annually.
  • Landlords should have PAT tests carried out annually on all portable electrical equipment.

PAT testing involves carrying out an external visual inspection and a detailed examination of the internal aspects of the plug in order to check wiring, connections, and the fuse.
