Case Study: Manchester Central Convention Complex Ltd (MCC)

Challenge:
Manchester Central faced the challenge of refurbishing several public toilet facilities that were outdated and no longer met contemporary standards for design and functionality. The existing mechanical and electrical systems were inefficient, resulting in increased maintenance costs and high energy consumption. Furthermore, the facilities needed to be inclusive and accessible to all users, including those with disabilities, necessitating full compliance with current accessibility regulations. A key challenge was to carry out the refurbishment with minimal disruption to the operations of this busy city centre venue.

Solution:
The comprehensive solution involved the complete removal and reinstatement of the mechanical and electrical systems within the refurbished public toilets. This included the refurbishment of male and female toilets and urinals on the second floor, as well as the installation of three new disabled-accessible toilets. The scope of work encompassed the following technical elements:

  • Sanitaryware and Pipework: All existing sanitaryware was replaced with modern, efficient units. New pipework was installed from local isolation valves and stacks to the new sanitaryware, ensuring a reliable water supply and effective waste management, while reducing the likelihood of maintenance issues.

  • Ventilation Modifications: The ventilation systems were upgraded to improve air quality and energy efficiency. This included the installation of new fans and ductwork to enhance airflow and reduce energy usage.

  • Electrical Modifications: New electrical supplies were installed to power the newly fitted Dolphin units, known for their efficiency and user-friendly design. All existing electrical systems and ancillaries were thoroughly tested and commissioned to ensure compliance with safety and operational standards.

  • Insulation and Operational Efficiency: All new services were properly insulated to prevent energy loss and enhance operational efficiency. This insulation plays a crucial role in maintaining system performance and reducing energy costs.

Benefits:

The refurbishment of the public toilets at Manchester Central delivered several key benefits:

  • Enhanced User Experience: The modernised facilities offer a more pleasant and hygienic environment, with new sanitary ware and improved ventilation contributing to user comfort and satisfaction.

  • Increased Energy Efficiency: The upgraded mechanical and electrical systems, including energy-efficient Dolphin units and improved insulation, have led to reduced energy consumption and lower operational costs.

  • Compliance with Accessibility Standards: The addition of three disabled-accessible toilets ensures full compliance with current accessibility regulations, making the facilities more inclusive and user-friendly.

  • Reduced Maintenance Requirements: The use of durable, modern materials and systems has significantly reduced the need for frequent repairs and maintenance, lowering long-term operational costs.

  • Improved Aesthetic Appeal: The fully refurbished facilities enhance the overall appearance of Manchester Central, supporting its reputation as a premier city centre venue and potentially attracting more visitors and events.
